Quite a pleasure this, an antidote for all of those who are a bit tired of 15 minute long shuffle fests of tracks. Don't get me wrong, I like some of the fodder that the likes of Cadenza throws out, such as Digitaline's Anticlockwise has a wonderful gentle keys patch in between the shuffles and gasping, but alot of the time I sit wishing that 10 minutes is cut off the run time and a bit of meat and progression is thrown in to add just a little dynamic.
Slap on the first track from Swedish duo Donk Boys EP 'Sing Along With' and the effect is startlingly similar as to when a Looney Tunes character stumbles upon a pile of cash... the 'boing-keching' eyes, naturally with $ replaced with vinyl or whatever danceland based cliche of your choice.
Mongoponny to my ears is everything that is right for those bang on peak time moments on the dancefloor. Bassdrums and bassline working from the off, its pure tech house heaven, with percussive elements all joining in at the right time ensuring that the track doesn't lose its sparkle in its aim to hypnotise. Little minimal stabs punch through the all encompassing rumble of the bassline loop to really force this home.
Where Mongoponny lays the sound on think and hypnotic, Elephant has a bit more funk and bounce to proceedings, certainly leaning more towards the tech house end of the spectrum rather than the minimal bassdrum assault vibe. Don't be fooled though, there is plenty of lively energy in this track with its little micro edits to ensure you at least have 2 x electronic battle weapons of choice on this EP. Those who loved the likes of Brett Johnson's 'Stucco Homes' will appreciate this house vibe.
Zonky and Gump Nymix both manage to mirror the dark and techy of the other two tracks on the EP, but, to my ears, lesser effect.
A solid addition to the box, certainly makes me want to check out their latest release, Hoppetoss (again on Floppy Funk) as I continue in my never ending search for OAP scaring beats.
